Natsu Dragneel, along with his cat named Happy, has traveled to the town of Hargeon in search of a wizard named Salamander. Here he runs into a young woman named Lucy Heartfilia, a Celestial Wizard, who is determined to join the famous Fairy Tail Guild.
A train pulls into the station at the harbor town of Hargeon and on board are a small blue cat and a young man face down on the floor. The conductor asks what's wrong and the cat says that it happens all the time to the young man named Natsu Dragneel. He gets sick every time he travels on any moving thing. The cat's name is Happy and he tells Natsu that they are at their stop. Natsu is too slow to get moving and the train leaves with him on it, much to Happy's dismay.
Lucy Heartfilia is also in the same town and finds the one and only magic store. She sees the White Doggy gate key in the store and asks how much for the key. The store owner tells her 20,000 jewels. Lucy tries using her 'womanly charms' on the store owner to get a big discount. He gives her a discount and she is angry that her looks only got her 1,000 jewels off the price. As she is walking down the street, a bunch of girls run by and are excited about meeting a wizard named Salamander. Lucy can't believe that the wizard that can control fire is in this town. She runs toward the crowd of girls and sees Salamander. Her heart starts pounding and she is infatuated with the wizard. He flaunts his good looks and has all the girls infatuated with him. At this point, Natsu and Happy are walking down the street after Natsu got back from a second train ride. They have no money and they are both hungry when they hear about the commotion. Natsu and Happy think that Salamander is most likely Igneel and Natsu is excited and bursts through the crowd of girls and is disappointed when he sees who Salamander is. The girls get angry with him and start beating him up and Lucy snaps out of her infatuation with Salamander. Salamander offers Natsu an autograph and Natsu says he doesn't want it which gets him another beating by the girls. Salamander leaves and invites all the girls to his boat later that evening for a party.
Lucy is reading a wizard magazine and reads a story about the Fairy Tail guild and she wonders how she can join it. Salamander appears and has overheard her wish to join Fairy Tail and says that he could possibly get her invited into the guild if she would come to his party and keep the fact that he uses a charm spell secret. She agrees and he leaves. She thinks that as long as she plays along that she will be able to join the Fairy Tail guild.
Natsu and Happy are discussing the nice meal they had when Happy spots Salamanders ship in the harbor. Just the sight of it makes Natus queasy and they overhear some girls saying they wished that they had been invited to the party by the famous Fairy Tail wizard. This gets Natsu's attention.
On the ship, Salamander has Lucy in his cabin and is trying to get her to drink something and she tries to play along when she slaps it away. She tells him that he is trying to use a sleep spell on her. He commends her on catching that fact when some of his men appear in the room with several unconscious women on their shoulders. It seems that they are his 'merchandise' and Lucy is 'merchandise' too. She reaches for her gate keys but they are snatched away by Salamander's magic. He says that the keys can only be used by a celestial wizard and since he is not one, they are of no use to him and he throws them overboard.
Lucy fears the worst when Natsu comes crashing in through the roof, but then he gets sick from the motion of the boat. Happy flies in with wings and grabs Lucy to take her to safety. He dodges the magic fired by Salamander but his magic wears out and his wings disappear and he and Lucy fall into the water. Lucy swims to her keys and gets them.
On the ship, Salamander is disappointed that Lucy got away and figures that she is done for as his men kick Natsu. Natsu glares at Salamander and asks if he is really with Fairy Tail.
Lucy reaches the surface and uses the Aquarius key and summons her. Lucy commands Aquarius to use her power and sweep the ship onto the shore. Aquarius is angry that Lucy lost the keys and threatens to kill her the next time she loses them and then uses her magic to create a giant wave that washes the ship onto the shore along with Lucy and Happy. It seems that Aquarius accidentally washed the ship ashore because she was really aiming for Lucy. She tells Lucy not to call her for a while and vanishes. Salamander and his men stagger to get up and Natsu appears on the bow of the wrecked ship. He asks Salamander if he is really a Fairy Tail wizard. Salamander asks him what of it and sends his thugs after Natsu. Lucy is worried for Natus and Happy tells her not to worry and that he should have told her earlier that Natsu is really a wizard. Natsu knocks away the thugs and tells Salamander that he can't be with Fairy Tail because Natsu is a Fairy Tail wizard and he hasn't seen Salamander before. Salamander uses his magic on Natsu and Natsu just eats the magic and uses his fire based magic on Salamander. The thugs call him by his real name which is Bora. It seems that Bora had been a member of another guild but was kicked out. Natsu is the real Salamander of Fairy Tail and he defeats Bora easily, although he creates a lot of destruction to the town in the process. The military comes in and Natsu grabs Lucy and starts running. Lucy asks him why he grabbed her and he says that she wanted to join Fairy Tail and to come with him. She is ecstatic about the prospect of joining the famous Fairy Tail guild.
